SCA Harnesses Cutting-Edge Digitalization and Lifecycle Management Solutions from Voith and BTG to Enhance Resource Efficiency Throughout its Paper Machine Operations
SCA has been achieving remarkable success in leveraging Voith’s digital and automation solutions to optimize production efficiency in their new XcelLine PM 2. Located at the Obbola site, this state-of-the-art paper machine, commissioned by Voith last year, boasts impressive capabilities, producing 725,000 tons of kraftliner annually with basis weights ranging from 100 to 200 gsm and a remarkable design speed of 1,400 meters per minute.
Gustaf Nygren, Mill Manager at SCA’s Obbola site, envisions a promising future, stating, “The journey for SCA and Voith together has only just begun. We have a long-term partnership in place with the target of reaching the common vision of PM 2 in Obbola becoming the new reference for safety, efficiency, and digitalization.”
In pursuit of their goals, SCA has integrated more than 10 innovative digitalization and automation solutions across the entire paper machine, drawn from Voith’s Papermaking 4.0 portfolio and its subsidiary. Notable solutions from the OnEfficiency family enhance line efficiency and stabilize product and process quality, contributing to sustainable and resource-efficient paper production. SCA also relies on applications from the OnCare family to monitor productivity and swiftly implement optimization measures.
Digital services such as the OnCall.Video remote maintenance service further enhance machine availability. Additionally, Voith’s Paper Webshop streamlines the procurement of spare parts and services, all supported by the secure IIoT dataPARC cloud platform.
Niclas Ahnmark, Paper Mill Manager at SCA, affirms, “With the PM 2, we will take our next steps in the digitalization journey. The applications provided by Voith will help us monitor the process and make the right decisions.”
SCA has also committed to a long-term service agreement with Voith subsidiary BTG, specifically for process control. BTG’s Lifecycle program ensures optimal consistency accuracy and control, offering preventive maintenance services for the entire consistency sensor installation base, including regular calibration and routine checks. BTG Field Service Engineers assist in planning, implementing, and coordinating various maintenance services, maximizing machine uptime while maintaining SCA’s stringent safety standards.
This enduring collaboration with SCA, underpinned by the Efficiency Partnership, underscores the shared commitment to achieving optimal results. Cross-functional teams collaborate closely to ensure the solutions are maximally effective. Stephan Sicking, Vice President Sales FRS EMEA at Voith Paper, explains, “As part of a digitalization roadmap, we have defined common goals and KPIs in a cross-functional team, developed a customized concept, and are now providing support for successive installation and employee training. Already, the benefits from this collaborative approach are clearly demonstrated.”
